Hyundai showcases Gamma 1.6 T-GDI and Euro6 R-2.0 diesel engines
Some 1,000 world-class powertrain experts and academics attend
Hyundai Motor Group will host ‘The 11th Hyundai-Kia International Powertrain Conference’ between October 19 – 20 to unveil the Group’s latest powertrain technologies and discuss industry trends with world-class experts.
In line with this year’s slogan of ‘Innovation of Powertrain Technology Through Collaboration,’ the conference was designed to offer industry experts an opportunity to discuss next-generation powertrain development directions and share innovative technologies, in response to tougher environmental policies worldwide. The annual conference was held at Rolling Hills Hotel, located near the Hyundai-Kia Motors R&D Center in Korea.
“Due to stricter environmental regulations and policies that vary from nation to nation, competition in the development of powertrains and other core technologies is intensifying,” said Woong-Chul Yang, Hyundai Motor Co. Vice Chairman. “Hyundai Motor will accelerate its efforts to develop future powertrains that feature high-performance and eco-friendly engines and transmissions.”
At the conference, Hyundai Motor showcased two innovative powertrains that were fully developed in-house: The Gamma 1.6 T-GDI engine and Euro6 R-2.0 diesel engine.
The Gamma 1.6 T-GDI engine, which was developed over a period of 52 months and cost 69.5 billion won, achieves the best performance figures in its class where the competition is the toughest. The engine beats its formidable rivals, boasting a maximum output of 204hp and torque of 27.0kgf.m at 6,000 rpm and 1,750 rpm, respectively.
Moreover, by remarkably cutting down on exhaust emissions, the engine meets California’s ULEV-2 (Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle) standard, known as the most stringent, as well as Euro 5 standards.
In order to maximize fuel efficiency and performance, the engine uses an exhaust manifold integrated turbocharger with twin scroll, air guided intercooler, direct fuel injection system and dual CVVT, while a bed plate and a serpentine auxiliary belt were adopted to enhance engine reliability.
The Euro6 R-2.0 diesel engine, aimed to satisfy the next-generation Euro6 regulations by applying new technologies, such as low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, was also introduced during the conference. It delivers world-class performance with a maximum output of 150ps and maximum torque of 39.0kgf.m without sacrificing its eco-friendliness.
As required by new regulations, the Euro6 reduced Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 56 percent, compared to Euro5. By introducing the Euro6 R-2.0 diesel engine, Hyundai Motor is expected to lead the eco-friendly passenger car diesel engine technology field, satisfying the standards more than two years ahead of their implementation.
Hyundai Motor also displayed its motor-integrated six-speed front wheel drive automatic transmission equipped in the Sonata Hybrid, as well as the gasoline Theta T-GDI engine, gasoline Kappa bi-fuel engine, diesel R-2.2 2 stage turbo-charger and the six-speed double clutch (DCT) to enhance participants’ understanding of new technology trends.
Some 1,000 world-class powertrain experts and academics participated in the conference, including members from Bosch, Continental, Delphi, Magna Powertrain and Denso.
Throughout the two-day conference, some 30 companies will release 50 theses in six sessions, including presentations on next-generation gasoline technology, exhaust and after-treatment technology, diesel innovation technology, exhaust reducing technology, high efficiency transmission and improving driving experiences.

Genesis Hurricane SC to Create a Storm at 2011 SEMA Show
HATCI and Magnuson Supercharge Hyundai Genesis Coupe
COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 13, 2011 — To showcase the extreme power of Hyundai’s most popular performance car, Hyundai America Technical Center Inc. (HATCI) teamed up with Magnuson Products, Rhys Millen Racing, Harman International and Torvec Inc. to develop and build a special edition prototype Genesis Coupe, the Genesis Hurricane SC. HATCI, Hyundai’s design, technology and engineering branch, will display the high-performance Genesis Coupe in Hyundai’s 2011 SEMA Show booth from November 1-4, 2011 in Las Vegas.
The Genesis Hurricane SC represents a two year development effort by HATCI, as its engineers worked to enhance all aspects of the vehicle including power, traction, braking, exterior and interior design and audio system. Highlighting the performance modifications, HATCI teamed up with Magnuson Products to supercharge Genesis Coupe’s 3.8L V-6 engine with a liquid to air intercooler, producing more than 450 horsepower.
“The HATCI and Magnuson supercharger demonstrates the high-performance potential of Genesis Coupe’s V-6 engine – the car was engineered to handle this kind of extra power,” said David Dutko, senior engineer, HATCI. “Our HATCI engineers have been working for years with Magnuson to ensure high engine output is available on future Hyundai vehicles.”
“The supercharger creates a modest six to seven pounds of boost which generates a 35-45 percent increase in horsepower and torque and can be easily modified to deliver even higher boost levels,” said Terry Peddicord, director, sales, Magnuson Products. “One of the many exciting aspects of this project is that the Genesis Hurricane SC is not just another pretty face for the show circuit, but rather it is a hard working lab-rat that will push the bounds of this car and the whole vehicle segment.”
In addition to the supercharged V-6, Torvec Inc. has been developing its IsoTorque differential with improved handling and traction capability with HATCI engineers at the Hyundai Proving Grounds in California. The IsoTorque differential delivers nearly a one second per lap improvement in the Genesis Coupe on the Hyundai road course.
Beyond the engine, Genesis Hurricane SC has a long and impressive list of both interior and exterior specialty modifications. Hyundai’s long-standing racing partner Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) provided exterior enhancements including a front bumper, grille, hood, side skirts, diffuser and rear deck with spoiler. RMR partners Enkei and Hankook provided the high performance 19-inch wheel and tire assemblies, a RMR free flowing exhaust system and air intake was utilized to free up more engine power. The vehicle also sports upgraded LED headlights and taillights provided by FlyRyde.
The Hurricane’s interior also received some state of the art enhancements including a Harman International high level Lexicon audio system that was tuned in house by HATCI engineers and Katzkin custom premium leather and suede seats accented with blue inserts.
Mechanically, the Hurricane SC has Bilstein monotube shock absorbers and springs with adjustable ride height tuned on the Nurburgring in Germany and a Brembo six piston brake kit with cross drilled front and rear rotors. The engine also received a SPEC lightweight single mass aluminum flywheel and stage two clutch, DeatschWerks high flow fuel pump and 600cc injectors, Perma-Cool oil, differential and steering coolers and a custom CPR Fabrication billet aluminum oil filter adapter.
Additionally, on the SEMA Show floor the numerous parts of the Genesis Hurricane SC will be displayed, providing show-goers the opportunity to experience and interact with the vehicle’s actual hard parts and future developments.

Hyundai to Showcase New Thinking at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show

Hyundai unveils next-gen FCEV sedan concept ‘Blue2′ and Sonata Hybrid

Cutting-edge eco-friendly and telematics technologies show Hyundai’s future

Separate booth displays Hyundai’s latest commercial vehicle technology

Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, showcased its latest `new thinking’ on products, technologies and services to the world at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show, which opened today under the theme of ‘Evolution, Green Revolution on Wheels.’

Hyundai unveiled its latest eco-friendly creation, the Blue2 (Read as “Blue square”) concept vehicle, the company’s first sedan-style Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) powered by hydrogen. The automaker also introduced its first gasoline-hybrid vehicle, the Sonata Hybrid, to its home market. Most importantly, Hyundai applied its new brand direction, “New Thinking. New Possibilities.”, throughout its exhibition, including its customer-oriented booth design, entertaining displays and cutting edge future technologies.

“Hyundai’s goal is not to be the biggest car company, but the most loved. We want to be a reliable partner to our customers, supporting their happiness, rather than a company that pursues its own interests,” said Steve S. Yang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor. “We will ceaselessly introduce world-class products of the best quality to overcome the difficult market environment and turn it into an opportunity, while modestly listening to the voice of the customer.” In particular, Hyundai will focus on “improving quality, creating new values through new thinking, and developing advanced eco-friendly technologies to contribute to a greener society,” Yang said.

Blue2

Hyundai Motor staged a world premiere of its new concept car, Blue2 (codenamed HND-6), a mid-size FCEV which shows a blueprint for future sedans. The name ‘Blue2′ is a combination of Hyundai’s sub eco-brand ‘Blue Drive’ and the number `2′ from H2, the symbol for hydrogen gas.

Aiming at gaining early leadership of the FCEV market, Blue2 is powered by a fuel cell electric system that delivers a stack power of 90kW(1.65kW/L) and fuel economy of 34.9km/?. The Blue2 is materialized in a sporty and luxurious style, a combination of futuristic, flowing designs and eco-friendly features. The Blue2 is equipped with low-resistance tires and alloy wheels which are designed to improve aerodynamic performance, while the car’s interior design encompasses a futuristic look by using eco-friendly new materials.

Hyundai’s concept keywords for the exterior design are ‘Intersected Flow,’ featuring innovative and dynamic designs. The vehicle’s condition is visible via unique and futuristic images on the exterior of the car through outside LED screen panels, which are located on both the front and rear of the car. Blue2 also features a welcome system which recognizes the driver, while an automatic opening door system enhances the driver’s convenience. Conventional side mirrors are replaced by side cameras and a roof camera, offering a state-of-the-art driving environment.

The exterior designs flow inside the vehicle, with asymmetrically-designed dashboards and doors to optimize a driver’s convenience and add emotional value. Wider seats enable people to get in and out of the vehicle more comfortably.

Hyundai combined the cluster and center fascia, applying an advanced Transparent Organic Light Emitting Diode (TOLED) monitor and ultra-light tempered glass, called Gorilla® Glass, providing more accurate and vivid graphic information. The infotainment system is operated by a Motion Sensor Moustick, a haptic wheel and motion sensor that respond to the driver’s touch and hand movements, respectively, giving drivers a new experience.

Blue2 aims to satisfy all the senses of future drivers, including the air they breathe: A cluster ionizer freshens the air inside the vehicle, while antibacterial genuine leather with leaf-shaped patterns, called ‘eco-graphic perforation,’ enhances an eco-friendly look and feel.

Sonata Hybrid

Hyundai also unveiled its first gasoline hybrid model, the Sonata Hybrid, to its home market. The Sonata Hybrid, which made its world debut at the 2010 New York International Auto Show, also encompasses Hyundai’s new thinking, as Hyundai developed the world’s first full parallel hybrid system and applied lithium-ion polymer batteries to a hard type hybrid model for the first time in the world.

Equipped with a Nu 2.0 Hybrid engine, a 6-speed hybrid automatic transmission and a 30kW hard type hybrid electric motor, the Sonata hybrid delivers a peak output of 191ps (engine: 150ps, electric motor: 41ps) and the best fuel economy in its class at 21.0km/? (All specifications limited to the Korean market).

The Sonata Hybrid, which is based on Hyundai’s best-selling mid-size sedan, differs from the gasoline model with its dynamic `hexagonal grille.’ The vehicle also has an `Eco Guide Gauge’ on its cluster to help drivers build more economical driving habits. The Sonata hybrid will go on a sale in the Korean market in the first half of this year.

i40, Curb, and In-Vehicle Technologies

Along with Blue2 and the Sonata hybrid, Hyundai introduced i40, a mid-size wagon exclusively developed for the European market, which made its world debut at Geneva in March. Hyundai also displayed Curb (codenamed HCD-12), a compact Urban Activity Vehicle (UAV) concept unveiled at Detroit in January. Curb, targeted at the next generation of Hyundai buyers, is also a test bed for future Hyundai in-vehicle connectivity technology.

In order to promote its advanced eco-friendly technologies, Hyundai built a ‘Blue Drive Zone’ at its booth, which displays its first Full Speed Electric Vehicle (FSEV) BlueOn and its electric bicycle ECCOV. Hyundai’s most advanced powertrain technology will also be on display – some for the first time – including its 6-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) and 8-speed auto transmission, as well as its 1.6 Gamma Turbo GDi, Nu 2.0 GDi and Nu 2.0 CVVL (Continuously Variable Valve Lift) engines.

The ECCOV (Eco Community Vehicle), introduced at Geneva in March, boasts a maximum speed of 30 km/h and can travel as much as 50 km on a single charge in electric mode.

A total of five new future in-vehicle technologies introduced at the 2011 CES early this year were also on display: Smart Connectivity System, which allows drivers to connect their smart phones and tablet PCs with the vehicle; Motion Sensor Moustick, which recognizes the driver’s hand movements through sensors to control the car’s audio and navigation system; Dynamic Cluster, an LCD gauge and information system that is driver-customizable; Car Browser System and Web Platform, a fully functional Internet terminal; and Multifunctional Safety Vision System, a four-camera, 360-degree view around the vehicle.

Commercial Vehicles

Hyundai Motor set up a separate booth for its commercial vehicles under the concept of ‘Enjoyable Sensation Truck & Bus,’ displaying three new models: The New Trago 27t Dump, Mega space-cab Tractor and the 2011MY Universe.

In order to promote its future eco-friendly technology, Hyundai’s commercial vehicle booth also created a ‘Green zone,’ showcasing its electric bus, diesel hybrid mega truck, hydrogen fuel cell bus cutaway and a new eco-friendly power system technology.

In particular, ‘Elec-City’ is a zero-emission electric bus developed in-house. A test fleet of Elec-City will be operated in some metropolitan bus routes starting this year, while Hyundai plans to mass produce the buses starting in 2013. During the G20 Seoul Summit in 2010, Elec-City was used as the official shuttle bus for organizers and officials.

Equipped with three 100kW motors, Elec-City delivers a peak output which is equivalent to a combustion engine’s 402ps and maximum speed of 100km/h. It can run 120 km on a single charge.

Hyundai also displayed two new commercial vehicle technologies: The Commercial Vehicle Telematics System, which collects real-time data from the vehicle to enable more efficient freight transportation management; and the 3.5t AMT system, which allows drivers to enjoy the convenience of an automatic transmission, with the fuel efficiency and power of a manual transmission.

New Thinking for Customers

Hyundai’s new thinking could be seen in its booth layout and services, as well. By reversing the conventional thinking that motor shows are for cars, Hyundai brought a new concept that motor shows are for ‘visitors,’ which means everything should be designed to maximize their enjoyable experience.

Hyundai’s new booth enables visitors to comfortably view the cars, while the entire space on the second floor of the booth is used as a lounge where customers can relax and get a view of the whole booth. Hyundai is also providing FCEV shuttle bus services to and from the parking lot to the exhibition hall. Staff members at the booth will provide product information using tablet PCs.

As part of its efforts to evolve from simply an auto manufacturer that provides transportation to an automaker that creates an auto culture, Hyundai presented its virtual-driving Veloster game machine, as well as a 4D theater showing ‘Robocar POLI,’ a 3D animation for children presented by Hyundai Motor, Roi Visual and EBS.

Press Release:

NEW CHAPTER STARTS FOR AWARD-WINNING HYUNDAI i10

Comprehensively enhanced version of Hyundai’s best-selling city car

Introduction of the all-new Hyundai i10 Blue with 99 g/km CO2 emissions

First of a new family of ultra-efficient Blue Drive vehicles

New engines (1.0-litre & improved 1.2-litre) and Intelligent Stop & Go (ISG) technology

Cheapest five-seat car on the market to achieve sub-100g/km CO2

i10 Blue – Road tax and London Congestion Charge exempt

Still great value: priced from £8,195 with class-leading specification

Hyundai has comprehensively updated its award-winning i10 city car range. The range-wide update – which goes on sale 1st March – marks the arrival of Hyundai’s first sub-100g/km Blue model, along with specification and design upgrades for the rest of the line-up.

The new and improved version of Hyundai’s entry-point model represents a significant step forward over the outgoing i10. Chief among the changes are enhancements to the i10’s design – both in the cabin and on the exterior of the car. These key design changes are in keeping with the brand’s bold and progressing design language, bringing a clear family resemblance between the new i10 and other recently launched Hyundais, including the sleek ix35 and ix20 models.

A new and improved range of Euro V compliant engines blend clean performance with excellent fuel economy and ultra-low emissions. The latest i10 introduces the all-new 1.0-litre ‘Kappa’ engine, which replaces the old 1.1-litre ‘Epsilon’ unit. This cutting-edge three-cylinder engine achieves a remarkable 67.3mpg combined: the sort of cheap-to-run credentials that will resonate with customers as the cost of motoring continues to rise. The popular 1.25-litre ‘Kappa’ engine has also been improved giving 13% more power (85bhp), 9.2% less CO2 (108g/km) and 8.7% better fuel consumption (61.4mpg) than the outgoing 1.25-litre ‘Kappa’ engine.

To make the most of the efficient new 1.0-litre engine, Hyundai has introduced an all-new model – the i10 Blue. This special ‘eco’ edition of the i10 emits an astonishingly low 99g/km CO2, so it gains exemption from VED and the London Congestion Charge. It is currently the only sub-£10k five-seater car on the market to achieve this, and the first of a family of Blue models that will underscore Hyundai’s commitment to environmental technology.

The revised range consists of four trim grades – Blue, Classic, Active and Style – all of which offer exceptional value for money. Equipment specification across the i10 range remains impressive, with usually optional features, such as air conditioning and the addition of an iPod plug-in, standard fit on all new i10s. As part of a class-leading equipment list, customers will also find four airbags, a six-speaker stereo, electric windows and central locking all as standard on all models. Prices start at £8,195 for the entry-level Classic model.

All new i10s come with Hyundai’s world-beating Five Year Triple Care package, for total peace of mind. This package includes five-year unlimited mileage warranty, five years’ roadside assistance and five years of vehicle health checks. It’s an offer that is yet to be matched by any of Hyundai’s rivals.

Press Release:

LATEST MODELS TO EMBODY HYUNDAI’S NEW BRAND DIRECTION AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

Hyundai will unveil two new models for Europe, as well as the company’s latest concept car, at the 2011 Salon International de L’Automobile in Geneva on 1st March. The three newcomers signify a new era for Hyundai captured neatly by the new brand slogan, ‘New Thinking. New Possibilities’.

Making its world premiere in Geneva will be Hyundai’s all-new D-segment model, the i40. Designed and engineered at Hyundai’s European R&D headquarters in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the i40 will move the company towards a ‘modern premium’ positioning that will bring high-end features and vehicle quality to Hyundai customers at accessible prices.

The evolution of the brand is also evidenced in the unique design aesthetic of Hyundai’s form language ‘fluidic sculpture’, which gives the i40 an innovative and attractive silhouette around a spacious and luxurious interior. The first official image of i40, revealed today, shows the sculpted shapes and thoughtful layout of the high-quality interior.

The i40 will go on sale from June 2011, supported by an upgraded version of Hyundai’s industry-best, fully transparent assurance package Five Year Triple Care.

The i40 will be joined on stage by the new Veloster, the company’s groundbreaking all-new three-door coupe making its European debut. First shown at the North American International Auto Show last month, the Veloster features a unique 1+2 door configuration and combines sporting looks, real-world practicality and cutting-edge technology – as well as best in class CO2 emissions of just 132 g/km.

Another model making its European premiere will be the Curb concept. Codenamed HCD-12, this compact Urban Activity Vehicle (UAV) features next-generation fluidic sculpture styling, and serves as a test bed for future Hyundai Blue LinkTM telematics technology.

Hyundai will also showcase the latest developments to come from its Blue DriveTM eco-focused program, including the electric BlueOn and ix35 FCEV. The company is targeting global leadership in the field of environmental technologies, with current and future Blue DriveTM models reducing Hyundai’s emissions in Europe.
