When the 2013 Mercedes GLK launched in the United States this fall, it was reported to be offered with a diesel engine.

Although we had heard rumors before, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia CEO Steve Cannon seems to have confirmed these plans with Automotive News.

Cannon refused to say which engine will make the transatlantic trip, but previous reports have suggested it would be a 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel from the GLK250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY. This means that we can hope to produce 204 PS (150 kW / 201 hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque.

Thanks to the new variant, Cannon GLK expects sales will climb to “30000″ with them compared with 24,310 units sold last year.

SLK 250 CDI: Roadster with Powerdiesel
The introduction of the new SLK 250 CDI by Mercedes-Benz not only marks the continuation of the company’s unique diesel engine heritage, but also serves to counter in impressive style the common misconception that diesel engines and sports cars are incompatible. The four-cylinder diesel engine in the Roadster delivers 150 kW (204 hp) from a displacement of just 2.2 litres to give the two-seater its characteristic sporty temperament. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h takes just 6.7 seconds – true sports car performance. Apart from all this, the SLK 250 CDI is the most economical and therefore the most environmentally compatible roadster in its segment. It is happy with 4.9 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined consumption). With the diesel engine in the SLK Mercedes-Benz has taken the next step in a successful strategy that began in 1936 with the 260 D model – the world’s very first diesel car. The world’s oldest motor manufacturer has continued to develop these robust and economical engines ever since and, as far back as the mid-1970s, was able to demonstrate their hitherto undiscovered qualities as high-performance units in record-breaking drives with the legendary C111-II D and the C111-III. The new Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI is the logical successor to these illustrious forbears.
A certain sluggishness has been accepted as an intrinsic characteristic of the diesel engine ever since Mercedes-Benz installed one in the world’s first diesel passenger car in 1936. So wrong. Some 40 years later, engineers working for the Swabian manufacturer began to look more closely at the performance potential of the thrifty compression-ignition engine – and soon discovered what they were looking for. They fitted a turbocharger to the standard 80 hp five-cylinder engine found in the 240 D 3.0 and 300 D models to elicit an impressive 190 hp from the 3-litre diesel.
With this powerful diesel engine under the bonnet of a spectacularly styled gull-wing model, painted in bright orange, Mercedes-Benz was soon geared up for some record-breaking drives. The C 111-II D powered its way to some sensational records at the Nardo circuit in southern Italy in 1976. For a whole hour, for example, it circled the high-speed track at anaverage speed of 253.770 km/h. It went on to collect further records in all categories – over distances of 10 to 10,000 kilometres and over periods of 6 to 24 hours.

No one had previously thought a diesel vehicle capable of such performance.
In April 1978, the even more aerodynamically designed C 111-III consigned these records to the scrapheap of history, with what was by that stage a 230 hp diesel engine with exhaust gas turbocharging and charge air cooling. It set a new record over one hour with an average speed of around 320 km/h, while the average over the other record distances also never fell below 314 km/h. No other diesel vehicle had ever even come close to such speeds. With these impressive records under its belt the C 111-III was able, once and for all, to prove the reliability and efficiency of the turbodiesel engine.
While these record-breaking drives were going on, development of the production version of the turbodiesel continued apace. These efforts led in 1978 to the market launch of the 300 SD, the world’s first diesel car with exhaust gas turbocharger.
In 1997 Mercedes-Benz ushered in a new era in diesel technology with the C 220 CDI. This was the first production passenger car to feature a diesel engine with common-rail direct injection. This new technology gave the car a significantly higher output and extra torque, while also setting new standards in the disciplines of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.
That Mercedes-Benz should now for the first time be offering the sporty SLK Roadster with a diesel engine is the logical next stage in these developments. Its four-cylinder diesel engine, with a displacement of 2143 cc, delivers 150 kW (204 hp) with available torque of 500 Newton metres – as much as a petrol-engined model with more than twice this displacement would normally offer. The new SLK 250 CDIfeatures the most powerful diesel powerplant in this class, with a thrust that propels the Roadster to a very sporty level of performance.
Equipped with the standard 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission (a six-speed manual transmission will follow in the second quarter of next year), the diesel SLK can cover the sprint from zero to 100km/h in 6.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 243 km/h. Moreover, the flexibility of the SLK 250 CDI is nothing short of phenomenal. Thanks to its enormous diesel torque it accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in just 4.3 seconds – easily the best figure in this class, making for safe and effortless overtaking.
Apart from all this, the SLK 250 CDI is the most economical and therefore the most environmentally compatible roadster in its segment. It is happy with 4.9 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined consumption), which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 128 g/km. In other words, the diesel SLK combines thoroughbred sports car performance with the fuel economy of a sub-compact. This guarantees effortlessly superior driving pleasure with great fuel efficiency.
The diesel engine achieves its exemplary output, torque, fuel consumption and emissions figures, as well as its highly impressive smoothness for a diesel unit, thanks to a series of innovative technologies. These include fourth-generation common-rail injection with precise injection timing, as well as two-stage turbocharging. Like all SLK models, the SLK 250 CDI is fitted as standard with an ECO start/stop system.
The frugal fuel consumption makes the SLK 250 CDI a car with superior long-distance qualities. Using the European motorways, it is quite possible to drive non-stop from the North Sea all the way to a beach on the Mediterranean. Very comfortable sports seats, a comfortable suspension setup and the largest luggage capacity in this segment also do their bit to create the right conditions.
As it shares the same genes with the other members of the successful SLK family, the SLK 250 CDI combines lightfooted sportiness with stylish comfort, a striking sports car design and absolute suitability for day-to-day use, while also delivering top performance with exemplary ecology. This means that the diesel version, too, provides open-top driving enjoyment at an extraordinarily high level.
Likewise, the SLK 250 CDI too is available with a choice of three versions of the famous vario-roof – one of them the panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. This glass roof can be changed from light to dark at the touch of a button. There are also three suspension variants: a conventional steel suspension, a sports suspension with a stiffer spring and damper setup and a suspension with an electronically controlled, fully automatic damping system.
Externally the new SLK 250 CDI is no different in appearance from the petrol models. It even retains the twin exhaust system, and therefore has the same stunning looks for which all the SLK models are known.
The SLK 250 CDI demonstrates just how much Mercedes-Benz has achieved with the diesel engine. A comparison of the world’s very first diesel saloon, the Mercedes-Benz 260 D of 1936, with the new diesel Roadster, reveals some astounding developments. The 260 D needed 0.3 litres of fuel per kilowatt per 100 kilometres, whereas the SLK 250 CDI requires a mere 0.03 litres – a bare tenth of the amount. We see the same picture in terms of the power-to-swept-volume ratio: the forefather of all diesel cars, the 260 D, generated 17.7 hp from one litre of displacement, while its family’s latest offspring, the SLK 250 CDI, produces 95.1 hp – more than five times the figure. The SLK 250 CDI thus shows that the diesel engine still holds remarkable potential for the future.

The telematics future of Mercedes-Benz. @yourCOMAND: always online for more information, safety and comfort
For many people, unrestricted access to information has become an indispensable part of their daily lives – be it at work or in their leisure time. And what’s more, worldwide more and more people are spending increasing amounts of time on the move – particularly also in the car where they want to stay fully “networked” wherever possible. Mercedes-Benz has responded to this growing customer need with its seamless telematics strategy @yourCOMAND: the inventor of the automobile showcases the concept of a comprehensive cloud-based system in its new F 125! research vehicle. Mercedes-Benz is already offering secure, convenient in-car internet access in numerous models courtesy of the COMAND Online multimedia system introduced this year.

Internet access, the convenient LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system, two different navigation solutions, interfaces for mobile devices and an intuitive operating concept: just some of the functions supported by the new COMAND Online multimedia system, which Mercedes-Benz has used to implement the motto “always on in the car” this year. The F 125! research vehicle, which paves the way for future in-car telematics and infotainment systems, provides a glimpse of the multimedia future at the Mercedes-Benz brand.

“@yourCOMAND turns the car into a mobile communications centre that provides the driver and passengers with access to all modern media and services at all times”, says Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Thanks to the consistently cloud-based solution, we can also uncouple from the established vehicle development cycles and are at eye level with the rapid developments in the world of consumer electronics. We can therefore always provide our customers with access to the latest applications for fully fledged in-car connectivity.”

Seamless experience and natural handling
The Mercedes-Benz telematics strategy is based on four components: @yourCOMAND stands for
Seamless experience,
Natural handling,
Sensory perfection and
Remote convenience.
Mercedes-Benz has implemented this strategic approach for the first time in its F 125! research vehicle.
Seamless experience connects the multimedia systems in the F 125! seamlessly and cross-functionally. The applications are socially interactive and do not distract the driver. Thanks to the permanent connection with the data cloud, the driver also has “seamless” access in the vehicle to all the used media, with no need for any cumbersome synchronisation.

Natural handling enables the telematics and infotainment systems in the F 125! to be largely controlled via voice as well as by means of supplementary intuitive gesture and touch elements. In order to promote optimum driver-fitness and operating safety, the research vehicle becomes the perfect, ever attentive front passenger for its driver and passengers. The driver can, for instance, request the latest news tailored to their personal needs and ask specific context-related queries without having to take the hands off the wheel.

Sensory perfection stands for high-end sound and high-resolution screens with pin-sharp, individual displays. The auto stereoscopic 3D display provides a 3D representation of the instrument cluster and can cluster relevant information on the F 125! display as required. The display is tailored to natural viewing habits, provides a clearer overview, thus reducing the driver’s workload. A retractable 17-inch display is fitted to the front passenger side, which is controlled entirely via gestures as part of the touchless interface. A high-resolution widescreen display instead of conventional mirrors enables the entire traffic area alongside and behind the vehicle to be conveniently monitored. This solution also helps identify the particular traffic situation faster and more intuitively.

Remote convenience enables the vehicle and its multimedia system to be fully preconfigured remotely using a PC or smartphone – from programming the navigation and entertainment system through to seat-specific presetting of the desired interior temperature. Authorised persons have constant access to information such as the fuel level in the tank, the next scheduled service or the fuel consumption via the vehicle’s specific homepage.

Mercedes innovations: from the research lab onto the road in no time at all
In the past, the company has repeatedly demonstrated just how quickly Mercedes-Benz can implement visionary technologies in series production – also in the area of active road safety, for instance. The company is also pushing forward with the innovation process for telematics and infotainment systems just as concertedly: key functions of the myComand connectivity concept unveiled in 2008 have now found their way into COMAND Online, which is already available for many of the brand’s models.
COMAND Online multimedia system: a host of functions and optimum convenience

The COMAND Online multimedia system allows Mercedes-Benz to already meet its aspiration of ‘always on’ in the Mercedes-Benz C- and E-Class as well as in the SLK-Class and the CLS-Class models. It will also be available for the new B- and M-Class, which will be launched in November. New apps for the social networking site FacebookTM and for GoogleTM Street View and Panoramio by GoogleTM will also be available for this system from November. Other apps that have already been launched include “Google Local search” and “Weather” as well as the option of sending a route or points of interest configured beforehand on a PC using Google Maps to the vehicle and uploading this into the navigation system. The required internet access for the COMAND Online functions is provided via a mobile using a Bluetooth connection.

Over the medium term, a dozen other apps are planned, which are currently under development in collaboration with partners, including innovative start-ups and other popular internet content providers. All customers driving a Mercedes-Benz fitted with COMAND Online can use the new apps. The Daimler vehicle backend server automatically updates COMAND Online and provides updates for apps – all without having to call into an authorised Mercedes-Benz dealer or a garage.

New functions added to hard-disc navigation
The fast hard-disc navigation function for COMAND Online has also been upgraded with new functions. New features include a 3D display with three-dimensional city views. Also new: routes covered can be recorded and repeated later, specific personal destinations can be stored or imported via an SD?card and four alternative routes can be displayed on the navigation map, one of them a particularly economical option. Mercedes-Benz customers in Europe receive the latest map updates for their COMAND Online multimedia system free of charge for three years. Authorised Mercedes-Benz dealers will upload updates for navigation data in 39 European countries into the navigation system when the car is brought to their premises.
In Europe, COMAND Online also comprises Speed Limit Assist, which receives its information for traffic sign recognition via a camera and navigation database. COMAND Online also includes the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system for audio, telephone and navigation. The new “One Shot” input function for the navigation system is particularly convenient, whereby the place and road can be said directly after one another. This function is currently available in seven languages and significantly enhances ease of operation.

The high-resolution colour display has a diagonal of 17.8 cm. Photos can be shown on the large screen and turned over manually, as in a slide show. Where the audio equipment is concerned, too, new types of representation bring a fresh look and more convenient operation. The new Cover Flow function, for instance, sorts the title images of the music albums stored in a carousel-like form, so that the Mercedes driver can easily leaf through their music collection – even if it is rather on the large side: the memory for compressed audio files (mp3, wma and aac formats) is now 10 GB in size. As an option, COMAND Online is available with a 6-disc DVD changer.

Greatest comfort is afforded by the Music Search function, which enables drivers and passengers to search the hard disc, SD memory cards, USB sticks, CD and DVD for specific music tracks and artists. The search can be according to various criteria, for instance album, music category or composer. If a name needs to be entered, the software will also tolerate spelling mistakes. The driver is therefore able to devote their full attention to the traffic. As a further advantage, the occupants are able to search all the connected media and devices simultaneously.

Perfect integration of smartphones
From the middle of next year, Mercedes-Benz will be offering a new infotainment option, which is especially developed for the iPhone. Once the iPhone is connected with the vehicle, an app developed by Mercedes-Benz, sends various information to the vehicle display and makes this function easy to control with the COMAND controller. The system uses the processing power of the iPhone and the vehicle’s wide display, to create a revolutionary uer interface with fluent transitions and animations.

Open standard for the integration of smartphones
Mercedes-Benz will support the seamless integration and secure usage of smartphones made by other manufacturers such as Nokia, HTC or Samsung in the car by means of the MirrorLinkTM open standard. This new connection option, which will be introduced in 2013, enables smartphone screen content to be transferred to the COMAND display and controlled with the COMAND controller.

Plug&play principle: operation is child’s play
Operation is very user-friendly: the user connects their phone to the vehicle and can then use roughly all the mobile phone applications in the car straight away with no limitations. While the handset provides the user with access to applications and services, the on-board infotainment system provides the necessary physical interfaces – the large colour display, loudspeakers and microphone. Operation is simple and reliable by means of the central COMAND Online rotary control/pushbutton. The on-board system is therefore ideally supplemented, providing constant access to the very latest applications. Due to fact, that the driver must be able to devote their full attention to the traffic at all times, only apps certified by Mercedes-Benz or the Car Connectivity Consortium can be used while driving.
Another advantage: the system not only enables a wide range of the apps available on the mobile to be used and shown on the vehicle display, but also allows specific vehicle applications to be developed simply with the user interface perfectly tailored to the vehicle architecture.

Near Field Communication: simplified pairing process
Near Field Communication (NFC) is an innovative transmission standard for the contactless exchange of data over short distances. The transmission distance is deliberately limited to just five centimetres, making the system virtually eavesdropping-proof. NFC makes usage even easier: typical Bluetooth pairing processes such as device search, selection and exchange of pass code are no longer required. The smartphone must be hold at an area, which is marked with the NFC symbol and the connection request must be confirmed. NFC will be premiered in 2013.

All the aforementioned systems – from iPhone integration to NFC – promote the unrestricted usage of smartphone functions in the vehicle, making for a more versatile, safer and more convenient in-car smartphone experience. These systems constitute major steps on the way to implementing the Mercedes-Benz @yourCOMAND strategy, since they already support basic functions such as seamless experience and sensory perfection.

Mercedes-Benz: three decades’ experience of mobile communications
Mercedes-Benz paved the way for (auto-)mobile communications in the 1950s with the introduction of an affordable car radio suitable for everyday use. The first sets, which were trialled in the 1930s, were large, heavy and prohibitively expensive. In 1992, Mercedes-Benz showcased the first fully integrated telematics system in the S-Class in the shape of the Communication and Navigation System (CNS).
The LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system followed in 1996, another groundbreaking innovation which still sets the benchmark even today. Mercedes-Benz launched the infotainment system dubbed COMAND in 1998. COMAND stands for “Cockpit Management and Data System” and combines the operation of all the installed systems such as radio, TV, telephony and navigation. 2002 saw the debut of the first 16:9 colour screen used at Mercedes-Benz. The rotary control/pushbutton, which was premiered in the S-Class in 2005 and subsequently rolled out in numerous other Mercedes-Benz models, makes it much easier to operate COMAND, thus enhancing the acknowledged exemplary operating comfort of the brand behind the three-pointed star.

C218 CLS63 V8 BITURBO BY VÄTH

The second generation of CLS-Class hides behind this name. It was first introduced to the public in Paris in 2010. This four-door coupé features improved performance, as well as correspondingly refined interior and exterior. This upgrade was made by a long-standing Bavaria-based VÄTH company from the town of Hösbach not far from Aschaffenburg.

A V63RS tuning kit features individually fine-tuned engine electronics and Vmax which increases the the capacity to 5.461 cm³ and the maximum torque is 484 kW or 660 HP, 960 Nm. This new tuning will delight you with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 12.0 seconds, as well as maximum speed of 325 km/h (don’t worry you get four tires as a gift with the car!). The kit price, including optimized charge air cooler system and sports exhaust system consisting of stainless steel catalysts, middle and tail muffler systems costs € 12,800.
The suspension in CLS 63 AMG by VÄTH features the front axle lowering springs of 20 to 40 mm plus rear axle electronic adjustment, it will cost you € 980.00. In order to improve overall performance it also makes sense to optimize the brakes which will cost € 590.00 with flexible steel brake lines, Technical Supervision certificate and Castrol SRF racing brake fluid included. Another € 6,337.88 you would have to pay due to the forged 3 piece 9×20 inch wheels with 265/30ZR20 tires for the front axle or 10,5×20 inch with 305/25ZR20 tires for the rear axle.

Even a layman will notice that an airflow front spoiler (€ 1,490.00), a trunk-lip spoiler (€ 1,480.00) and a rear diffuser with fins and underfloor extension (€ 1,490.00).
Certainly the interior was also hasn’t been untouched. VÄTH provided a car with a sports steering wheel in leather/leather design, also available with carbon or finewood applications upon request. For another € 1,450.00 the tachometer scale can be extended up to 360 km/h. And last but not least, for 3,300.00 € you can choose improved interior design in classy black carbon – high-precision manufacture and perfect fit are VÄTH hallmarks. Finally, it should be noted that the indicated prices include VAT.

MKB P 670 for Mercedes GL 500 / GL 450

668 hp / 491 kW and 1.200 Nm.
The MKB P 670 V12 biturbo engine in the Mercedes GL.

Until today Mercedes does not offer any AMG performance conversion for the GL-class.
If someone looks for bigger driving pleasure with his big luxury SUV he may know the leading Mercedes performance tuning company MKB since long.
Now MKB offers a range of 286 hp up to 668 hp.

Every GL driver and GL fan finds at MKB the most sovereign engines: the MKB RD6 for the 350 CDI reach up to 286 hp, the MKB RD 8 for the 450 CDI achieve 360 hp and even 850 Nm torque. Sporty drivers get with powerful gasoline V8 in the GL 500 the MKB 50/8 and 430 hp and 550 Nm which are really good fun to drive.

Those who will be not satisfied with such power numbers those find with the new MKB P 670 the most exclusive way to show in their Mercedes GL 500 the desired high dynamic sports car performance. The conversion to 668 hp peak performance of the MKB P670 means that the big Mercedes V8 will be swopped to the Mercedes V12 twin turbo which will be tuned by MKB on top.

This transplantation of hearts in the GL 500 is not easy to achieve. Even if the V12 fits the engine bay perfectly well. The outstanding knowledge and creativity of modern tuning companies such as MKB shows not in simply pressing a bigger engine into a chassis which was never thought to be equipped that way it shows clearly in the fact that such a conversion can not be recognized as such by the naked eye. But of course everyone will feel the bigger driving pleasure later on.

Optically the MKB P670 engine fits harmonic into the GL and harmonic and sovereign is its new drive.
The 4-Matic-drivetrain, the automatic gearbox, the electronic control systems, the mighty MKB P 670 altogether work perfectly matched and there is never any fear that the big power increase could create critical driving characteristics. The performance is simply great: it takes 4.4 s from 0 to 100 km/h and the top speed is limited at 270 km/h and here stops the big acceleration push by purpose. MKB too offers only the best and biggest braking solution available: at the front and rear axle work 380 mm ceramic discs and 6 and 4 piston brake callipers for quick and safe deceleration.

Potential customers must show two very distinct properties before any ride in their MKB P670 based upon the Mercedes GL 500. They must be relaxed with both time and money. The conversion takes up to 6 months and MKB asks 217.568.- EURO excluding VAT for it. But only if a Mercedes GL 500 will be brought for the conversion.

AMG Lightweight Performance: SLS AMG E-CELL gets carbon-fibre spine

The SLS AMG E-CELL body shell being shown by Mercedes-Benz AMG at the IAA 2011 is one trailblazing outcome of its ambitious “AMG Lightweight Performance” design strategy. Its key element is a transmission tunnel made out of lightweight carbon-fibre composite material (CFRP), which is structurally integrated into the aluminium body shell and firmly bonded with it. The high-strength and stiff CFRP component helps to reduce weight, while also serving as a monocoque housing for the battery modules.

The carbon-fibre battery monocoque in the SLS AMG E-CELL forms an integral part of the body shell and acts as the vehicle’s “spine”. The advantages of carbon composite materials were specifically exploited by the AMG engineers in its design. These include their high strength, which makes it possible to create extremely rigid structures in terms of torsion and bending, excellent crash performance and low weight. CFRP components are up to 50 percent lighter than comparable steel ones, yet retain the same level of stability. Compared with aluminium, the weight saving is still around 30 percent, while the material is considerably thinner. The advantages in terms of weight achieved through the carbon-fibre battery monocoque are reflected in the agility of the SLS AMG E-CELL and, in conjunction with the highly innovative wheel-selective four-wheel drive system, ensure true driving enjoyment.

The carbon-fibre battery monocoque is, in addition, conceived as a “zero intrusion cell” in order to meet the very highest expectations in terms of crash safety. It protects the battery modules inside the vehicle from deformation or damage in the event of a crash.

Tobias Moers, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, responsible for overall vehicle development: “AMG Lightweight Performance is the term we use at AMG to encompass all the different technologies involved in lightweight construction. The use of carbon makes vehicles not only lighter, but even more efficient and agile – in motorsports and on the streets. This is especially important for sports cars.”

The basis for CFRP construction is provided by fine carbon fibres, ten times thinner than a human hair. A length of this innovative fibre reaching from here to the moon would weigh a mere 25 grams. Between 1000 and 24,000 of these fibres are used to form individual strands. Machines then weave and sew them into fibre mats several layers thick, which can be moulded into three-dimensional shapes. When injected with liquid synthetic resin, this hardens to give the desired structure its final shape and stability.

Through their experience with the SLR, the vehicles in the AMG Black Series and in motorsport, Mercedes-Benz and AMG have accumulated more than 10 years of expertise in working with carbon-fibre materials. AMG currently makes the propshaft for the SLS AMG, for example, in carbon-fibre. On the SLS Roadster, the supporting structure for the draught-stop is made as standard as a carbon sandwich structure. This component, with extremely short cycle times in an industrially oriented manufacturing process, already demonstrates what will be possible in the future.
CFRP components also play an important role in Mercedes-Benz and AMG’s lightweight design strategy for the future. In conformity with the motto “the right material, in the right place, the proportion of high-strength steels, aluminium and fibre-reinforced plastics is set to increase significantly in the future. The body shell weight of all Mercedes-Benz vehicles should fall by ten percent compared with their predecessors.

Just how seriously Mercedes-Benz and its high-performance arm AMG are treating the issue of lightweight design as an important factor along the road to sustainable mobility, is demonstrated by the full-aluminium body shell of the SLS AMG. With it, the super sports model shows the way for future model ranges.
